The Nantahala Area SORBA (NAS) has had a tremendous year in 2023. The year started out with a record preceding year ENDO (end of year) fundraiser that amounted to over $5350 to start 2023. This record amount was due to the generous support of the (too many to name) local (Sylva, Cullowhee, Cherokee, and Bryson City) businesses and a donation by the local Specialized dealer, Motion Maker's Sylva Bicycle Shop, who donated a full suspension Stumpjumper. The NAS membership in 2023 hit a record high of approximately 50 active members.
NAS main focus remains to assist the USFS Cheoah Ranger District in maintaining the special use mountain biking and horse back riding trails at the Tsali Recreation Area. The Tsali Recreation Area consists of a seasonal campground with flush toilets and warm showers and over 42 miles of natural surface trails with spectacular views of Lake Fontana. NAS hosts formal spring and fall trail work days at Tsali that are open to the public with a social event (lunch) afterwards. NAS currently has 10 USFS certified sawyers, who voluntarily rotate to clear fallen trees and perform emergency trail maintenance throughout the year at Tsali. The trails at Tsali has just been listed as a runner up in the Best Biking Trail category in the February 2024 issue of the Blue Ridge Outdoor magazine (https://www.blueridgeoutdoors.com/go-outside/best-of-the-blue-ridge-2024/). Additionally NAS assists in providing support for special events at Tsali like the most recently (January 13, 2024) held Tsali Ultra (formerly the Frosty Foot) trail running race. In this (2024) current year NAS has negotiated or is in negotiations to assist other land owners/managers. The list of land owners/managers include the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (Fire Mountain Trails and Shut In Creek), Town of Sylva through the Pinnacle Park Foundation (Pinnacle Park and Blackrock Creek), Friends of Panthertown (Panthertown Valley Trails), Nantahala Ranger District (Roy Taylor Forest and Standing Indian Recreation Area), Jackson County Outdoor Recreation (trails at the Greenway), and Western Carolina University (Josh Whitmore Trails). NAS strives to promote mountain biking by assisting with maintenance of existing trails and/or possible further trail expansion and/or improvements.
